Thanks to director Christopher Nolan, who not only brought Batman back, but made it way more better. The Dark Knight is an Everest of dramatic and tense story, bringing up one of the most memorable bad guys in comic book stories - Joker. And you are asking why Batman are so serious about that.
All of Nolan movies have this great great meaning behind it. Stories never goes one direction, and they are not predictable. Nolan takes you by the heart and soul, and will not let you go, even when movie ends, you will still think about it for a long time, and its great message.
